Situation : Advice to a friend who has just bought a new dress for an important occasion. It is too tight for her, the style is too young and the color too harsh. Your dress looks expensive and nice but I'm afraid it is too tight and might make you feel uncomfortable. You're wearing dress it for an important occasion but do you think that its design is suitable for such a formal occasion? Yes, the colour will be wonderful to walk on the beach but as you see you are attending a conference. Why don't you ask for your mother/husband's opinions? Why don't you have a try and decide if you should return it to the store? Lesson 36 : THE LANGUAGE OF ARGUMENT Composition : "If you can get a free ride from on public transport, good luck to you!". What do you think of this attitude and why? The speaker of this saying perhaps wants to take advantage of free service. He does not care much for others but for himself/herself. He seems selfish in the sense that he does not appreciate public services. He probably thinks that public means something that belongs to everyone and public things can be taken for granted without showing any positive attitudes towards those who serve him. UNIT 19 Lesson 37 : RENT A CAR Situation : When you rent a car, you probably want to know its price, maker's H.P. or C.C, make of the car, instructions how to operate it and how to fix it in case of emergency. 21

A : Thank you very much for your clear instruction. B : You're welcome. UNIT 21 Lesson 41 : THIS ENGLISH Oral composition : Mr. Jones had been ill and went on holiday to build up his health. When he came home, he found that thieves had broken into his house. They'd messed up the bedroom and eaten up all the food in the kitchen and closed up the curtains in the living room. They'd blown up the safe in the study and stolen all the money he'd saved by giving up smoking. He rang up the police, who came immediately. "Did you lock up the house when you went away?" asked the detective. "Definitely," replied Mr. Jones. The detective went out into the garden. "Ah," he shouted. "They climbed up a tree and got in through the bathroom window. You must have left it open." He found a cigarette end and wrapped it up in a piece of paper. "Next time you go away," he said, "be sure you close the house up properly." Therefore, it is advisable that you learn there by heart and practice them often. 23

UNIT 22 Lesson 43 : OTHER PEOPLE'S HOMES Talking point : Persuade someone to buy your house/flat Price : reasonable Location : in the city center, near school, market, shops Facilities : modern and convenient 2 bedrooms-kitchen-bathroom- with yard and nice garden-can be used as an office Lesson 44 : EXCHANGING INFORMATION ABOUT HOME Learn the language and the information provided on page 87 which help you to do the composition on page 88. UNIT 23 Lesson 45 : A VISIT TO A DOCTOR Talking point : 1. Describe the symptoms of any common illness and say the treatment doctors usually prescribe. When you have a cold, you probably sneeze a lot and have temperature. You may feel tired and sleepy. Your doctor perhaps advises you to go to bed early and drink a lot of juice. He may prescribe you some cold medicine. You need good rest when having a cold. 2. "All medicines and medical treatment should be free." Discuss. Medicines and medical treatment usually cost much ; however, patients sometimes do not have enough money to pay. What should they do in this case? Free medicines perhaps, save more lives of the poor people as they need help from us. It is the dream of everyone to gel free medical treatment but where can we get money to pay doctors, nurses and technicians? How can we have money to produce medicines? So, in my opinions, the poor can get free medicines and medial treatment but others have to pay. Lesson 46 : AILMENTS Use of English : A : Rewrite the sentences; 24
  7. 1. A local chemist has advised her to see a doctor. 2. We ought to have it X-rayed. 3. I suggest you should go down to the local hospital. 4. You could have fractured a bone. 5. We're due to leave later on this evening. 6. Even if you did have it X-rayed, tomorrow morning would be the earliest you would get the results. 7. We'd better strap it up for you. 8. I can prescribe some pills to relieve the pain. 9. You'd be well advised not to put much weight on that ankle. B : Rewrite the following sentence using "have (something done)" 1. You must have your arm X-rayed. 2. That boy should have his eyes tested. 3. We must have our house painted. 4. I had my car serviced last week. 5. Jack had four teeth taken out last week. 6. She has just had her dress cleaned. 7. I will have my grass cut. 8. John must have his hair cut soon. UNIT 24 Lesson 47 : ARE YOU RULED BY YOUR EMOTIONS? Talking points : 1. Suggest ways to cheer up a person who is feeling miserable talk to a friend or a relative see a movie go out with friends go shopping go to bed read a book Can you add more to this list? 2. "Look before you leap." "Nothing ventured, nothing gained." Discuss these two proverbs. 25
  8. The first proverb advises us to be careful when doing things. We should take into everything before making a decision. The second proverb, on the contrary, encourages us to have great sense of adventure as unless we are willing to do something, we can obtain it. Usually, when venturing, one is not very careful. Lesson 48 : REACTING TO HYPOTHETICAL SITUATIONS AND CIRCUMSTANCES Do the questionnaire and learn the language of questionnaire : considering hypothetical situations which one has never been in. UNIT 25 Lesson 49 : CITY Situation : Complain to the receptionist about the lost laundry. You might want to say to the receptionist like this : Excuse me! I think you can help me with this. I had my clothes washed but I have lost my suits. They were not returned to me. Can you check if they were given to other customers or got lost in the laundry room? Talking points : 1. Compare and contrast the difficulties of living in a very old building with those of living in a very modern one.   9. Lesson 50 : PHRASAL VERBS (3) Review phrasal verbs 1 and 2 and learn this lesson. Composition : Describe what you would include in the design of a city for the 21st century. Useful words and expressions : High buildings highways more supermarkets automatic control of traffic more parks and green trees academic areas for schools and universities more recreation areas industrial areas in the suburbs Camera system to control the activities of people everywhere UNIT 26 Lesson 51 : THE OLYMPIC GAMES Lesson 52 : THE LANGUAGE OF ARGUMENT Read the text on the Olympic games and do all the exercises in these lessons. You may need to check up some new words in the dictionary. UNIT 27 Lesson 53 : PIANO The poem Piano shows the nostalgic feelings of the poet for his childhood and family. Can you pick out some words and phrases that were employed to express the poet's nostalgia? Example : betrays me back, the heart of me weeps Situation : Complain to the neighbor who plays the piano very badly and loudly at night. I hate to bother you but could you play the piano softly a little bit? I know that you are busy at daytime and you can only practise at night but my mother and all other neighbors do need some rest after a hard working day. Please stop your practice after 10 p.m. I appreciate your cooperation. Talking point : 27

Lawrence is showed on page 107. UNIT 28 Lesson 55 : LATE ARRIVAL General questions : 1. Do you think that it's important to be punctual? Why/Why not? Being punctual shows your disciplined characteristics and it helps keep activities as scheduled. You may be evaluated by your employers in terms of being punctual or not and you show a good example to your employees when you are you are late for a meeting, you may lose some important points or you may keep other people waiting. Time is money and should not be wasted. Being punctual is a good sign of a person in a modern time. Do you agree with this? Add more to the list. Talking point : Advice to someone who keeps being late for appointments Should be punctual or he may lose his job and his friends' trust. Lesson 56 : APOLOGIZING Learn the language for apologizing on page 111. Use of English : 1. You must have waited for me, please forgive me. 28
  11. 2. I really must have rung you. 3. As long as you have a paper to read, it's all right. 4. Seeing that you were late too, I'm not too worried. 5. Provided that you don't mind, I'll call again. 6. I can assure that I don't mind at all. Talking points : Advice to someone who wants to become a painter Like painting visit museums often take a drawing course practise every day travelling talk too other painters Lesson 58 : INTERPRETING SOMETHING DIFFICULT Use of English : 1. I find it completely baffling. 2. It utterly confused me. 3. The painting shocked us. 4. We all found it completely bewildering. 5. The film was very disappointing. 6. UNIT 30 Lesson 59 : NORTH VERSUS SOUTH Situation : Advice to a friend from the southern U.S.A. who wants to work in your country. He/she should look for a job in Ho Chi Minh. City or in Hanoi where the working and living conditions are more developed and more suitable to foreigners. It is easier for him/her to apply for a position as the need for foreign employee is high. Talking point : Describe your idea of a good holiday. Useful words and expressions : Good weather meet interesting people admire picturesque nature see local performances/festivals taste local specialties good and safe journey fond memories enjoy the time Lesson 60 : THE LANGUAGE OF ARGUMENT Further practice : A. 1. Fat people are usually in jolly temperament. 2. Thin people are normally in introspective temperament. Do other sentences similar to the two examples above. B. Complete the sentences 1. Famous people are normally clever by heredity. 2. Well -educated children are usually polite. Do other sentences similarly. C. Young people nowadays travel a lot. People with a lot of money are usually not happy. Cameras which are made in Japan are always expensive. Do all the exercises. 30

Each assignment should be done in 180 minutes. 1. Formally introduce your parents to your acquaintances. 2. Describe one of your friends. 3. What would you like to ask to find out as much as possible about the following things or people : a house you might buy a large city you are first time a person you might want to study with a hotel you're going to stay in a job you might take a person you're falling in love with 4.
